According to the text that accompanied this picture, the man pointing to the pink thing is Australian professor Barry Marshall, shown here using a balloon to explain the bacterium helicobacter pylori on a 2002 visit to Japan. I guess the picture ran because it was announced today that Prof. Marshall and his colleague Robin Warren won the 2005 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for discovering that bacteria, not stress, was the main cause of painful ulcers of the stomach and intestine.
Whatever. I still say you should never let anyone take your picture while you're pointing at a pink thing. It's just dorky.
